Charles-Émile Reynaud (1844-1918) looked at the Zoetrope and perfected it by using an inner circle of mirrors in 1877. He called the invention the Praxinoscope. He was also able to project the circling image using a lantern. This is the earliest known use of projection to show moving images. He eventually opened his own theatre to show cartoons on it that he drew himself. We still have one of the cartoons that were shown, Pauvre Pierrot (Poor Pete, in English). It contains 500 painted images.
