Phénakisticope and Zoetrope

Above is the Phénakisticope, which was invented by the French in 1832 and was the first moving animation device. It was seen as a novelty and kids toy. When it got over to North American and the British Empire, it used the name, Phantasmascope.

This is the Zoetrope. Invented in 1934. Unlike its predecessor, this allowed for more than one person to view the moving images at a time. A person would just have to spin the drum on the spindle base.
